At Just Basixx we want to be upfront and honest about the materials we use and why. Here are some common questions we get asked about sustainable clothing and the choices we make in the materials we choose.
What is sustainable clothing?
Sustainable clothing is made from environmentally friendly materials and uses production processes which can be sustained into the future so we can continue to enjoy them without using up our planet's precious resources.
What is organic cotton and why is it more sustainable?
Organic cotton is cotton which is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or chemicals. This means it is kinder to the soil it grows in and to the air around it. It also uses over 85% less water to produce than regular cotton and over 65% less energy. Organic cotton uses natural as opposed to artificial inputs. Not only is it better for the environment, organic cotton is also more durable than regular cotton as it is not exposed to weakening chemicals. This makes it stronger and softer than regular cotton.
What is bamboo and why do we not use it?
Bamboo is becoming one of the most talked about materials due to its sustainable qualities. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth. It uses very little water, does not require any pesticides or chemicals during growth and does not need to be replanted. On the surface, bamboo seems like a no-brainer in terms of sustainability. So, what's the problem? Bamboo is a woody, coarse plant and so it needs to be broken down in order to create a soft and silky material. This process is known as rayon or viscose. Strong chemicals are used in this process which are not environmentally friendly. The good news is that it is possible to turn bamboo into a lovely soft material for your clothing in a more sustainable way, but unfortunately we are just not quite there yet. We at Just Basixx are keeping informed on any progress made and will ensure to update our materials when it is more sustainable to do so.
Where do our materials come from and what other materials do we use?
At Just Basixx, we ensure that we are using the most sustainable materials from trusted sources. Our organic cotton is grown in Egypt and manufactured in Europe. The yarn we use is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) which is the world's leading textile processing standard for organic fibres including both ecological and social criteria.
You will notice that our socks also contain polyamide (nylon). This is to give strength to the material. Polyamide is very bad for our environment. It isn't biodegradable and it releases greenhouse gas into our atmosphere. Our solution to this is regenerated polyamide! The yarn is regenerated from the waste of raw materials in the earlier production process. It is ecologically sustainable and is OEKO-TEX STD 100 Class 1 as well as being certified by the Global Recycled Standard.
GOTS Licence Number: 1087797
What about our packaging? Is that sustainable?
Yes! Our socks come in a compostable bag. We deliver our products in recyclable mailers. Even our labels and stickers are compostable!
